As a result of discussions in the 1890s among\u00a0philosophers<\/a>\u00a0and psychologists concerning\u00a0climbers\u2019<\/a>\u00a0stories of the panoramic life review during falls.[9]<\/a>[10]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In 1892 a series of subjective observations by workers falling from scaffolds, war soldiers who suffered injuries, climbers who had fallen from heights or other individuals who had come close to death (near drownings, accidents) was reported by\u00a0Albert Heim<\/a>. This was also the first time the phenomenon was described as clinical syndrome.[11]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In 1968\u00a0Celia Green<\/a>\u00a0published an analysis of 400 first-hand accounts of\u00a0out-of-body experiences<\/a>.[12]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0This represented the first attempt to provide a\u00a0taxonomy<\/a>\u00a0of such experiences, viewed simply as anomalous perceptual experiences, or\u00a0hallucinations<\/a>. In 1969, Swiss-American\u00a0psychiatrist<\/a>\u00a0and pioneer in near-death studies\u00a0Elisabeth Kubler-Ross<\/a>\u00a0published her groundbreaking book\u00a0On Death and Dying: What the dying have to teach doctors, nurses, clergy, and their own families.<\/a><\/em>\u00a0These experiences were also popularized by the work of\u00a0psychiatrist<\/a>\u00a0Raymond Moody<\/a>, who in 1975 coined the term \u201cnear-death experience\u201d (NDE) as an umbrella term for the different elements (out of body experiences, the \u201cpanoramic life review,\u201d the Light, the tunnel, or the border).[11]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The term \u201cnear-death experience\u201d had already been used by\u00a0John C. Lilly<\/a>\u00a0in 1972.[13]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers<\/a>\u00a0have identified the common elements that define near-death experiences.[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Bruce Greyson<\/a>\u00a0argues that the general features of the experience include impressions of being outside one\u2019s physical body, visions of deceased relatives and religious figures, and transcendence of egotic and spatiotemporal boundaries.[14]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Many common elements have been reported, although the person\u2019s interpretation of these events often corresponds with the\u00a0cultural<\/a>,\u00a0philosophical<\/a>, or\u00a0religious<\/a>\u00a0beliefs of the person experiencing it. For example, in the US, where 46% of the population believes in\u00a0guardian angels<\/a>, they will often be identified as angels or deceased loved ones (or will be unidentified), while Hindus will often identify them as messengers of the god of death.[15]<\/a><\/sup>[16]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n
