Bohemia was made a part of the early Slavic state of\u00a0Great Moravia<\/a>, under the rule of\u00a0Svatopluk I<\/a>\u00a0(r. 870\u2013894). After Svatopluk\u2019s death Great Moravia was weakened by years of internal conflict and constant warfare, ultimately collapsing and fragmenting due to the continual incursions of the invading nomadic\u00a0Magyars<\/a>. Bohemia\u2019s initial incorporation into the Moravian Empire resulted in the extensive\u00a0Christianization of the population<\/a>. A native monarchy arose to the throne, and Bohemia came under the rule of the\u00a0P\u0159emyslid dynasty<\/a>, which would rule the Czech lands for the next several hundred years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The P\u0159emyslids secured their frontiers from the remnant Asian interlocurs, after the collapse of the Moravian state, by entering into a state of semi-vassalage to the Frankish rulers. This alliance was facilitated by Bohemia\u2019s conversion to Christianity, in the 9th century. Continuing close relations were developed with the East\u00a0Frankish<\/a>\u00a0kingdom, which devolved from the\u00a0Carolingian<\/a>\u00a0Empire, into\u00a0East Francia<\/a>, eventually becoming the\u00a0Holy Roman Empire<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a decisive victory of the Holy Roman Empire and Bohemia over invading Magyars in the 955\u00a0Battle of Lechfeld<\/a>,\u00a0Boleslaus I<\/a>\u00a0of Bohemia was granted the\u00a0March of Moravia<\/a>\u00a0by German emperor\u00a0Otto the Great<\/a>. Bohemia would remain a largely autonomous state under the Holy Roman Empire for several decades. The jurisdiction of the\u00a0Holy Roman Empire<\/a>\u00a0was definitively reasserted when\u00a0Jarom\u00edr of Bohemia<\/a>\u00a0was granted fief of the Kingdom of Bohemia by Emperor\u00a0King Henry II<\/a>\u00a0of the Holy Roman Empire, with the promise that he hold it as a vassal once he re-occupied Prague with a German army in 1004, ending the rule of\u00a0Boleslaw I of Poland<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first to use the title of \u201cKing of Bohemia\u201d were the P\u0159emyslid dukes\u00a0Vratislav II<\/a>\u00a0(1085) and\u00a0Vladislav II<\/a>\u00a0(1158), but their heirs would return to the title of\u00a0duke<\/a>. The title of king became hereditary under\u00a0Ottokar I<\/a>\u00a0(1198). His grandson\u00a0Ottokar II<\/a>\u00a0(king from 1253\u20131278) conquered a short-lived empire which contained modern\u00a0Austria<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Slovenia<\/a>. The mid-13th century saw the beginning of substantial German immigration as the court sought to replace losses from the brief\u00a0Mongol invasion of Europe<\/a>\u00a0in 1241. Germans settled primarily along the northern, western, and southern borders of Bohemia, although many lived in towns throughout the kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0House of Luxembourg<\/a>\u00a0accepted the invitation to the Bohemian throne with the marriage to the Premyslid heiress, Elizabeth and the crowning subsequent of\u00a0John I of Bohemia<\/a>\u00a0in 1310. His son,\u00a0Charles IV<\/a>\u00a0became King of Bohemia in 1346. He founded\u00a0Charles University in Prague<\/a>, central Europe\u2019s first university, two years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His reign brought Bohemia to its peak both politically and in total area, resulting in his being the first King of Bohemia to also be elected as\u00a0Holy Roman Emperor<\/a>. Under his rule the\u00a0Bohemian crown<\/a>\u00a0controlled such diverse lands as\u00a0Moravia<\/a>,\u00a0Silesia<\/a>,\u00a0Upper Lusatia<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Lower Lusatia<\/a>, Brandenburg, an area around\u00a0Nuremberg<\/a>\u00a0called New Bohemia,\u00a0Luxembourg<\/a>, and several small towns scattered around Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The more extreme Hussites became known as\u00a0Taborites<\/a>, after the city of\u00a0T\u00e1bor<\/a>\u00a0that became their center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the ecumenical\u00a0Council of Constance<\/a>\u00a0in 1415,\u00a0Jan Hus<\/a>, the\u00a0rector<\/a>\u00a0of Charles University and a prominent reformer and religious thinker, was sentenced to be burnt at the stake as a\u00a0heretic<\/a>. The verdict was passed despite the fact that Hus was granted formal protection by Emperor\u00a0Sigismund of Luxembourg<\/a>\u00a0prior to the journey. Hus was invited to attend the council to defend himself and the Czech positions in the religious court, but with the emperor\u2019s approval, he was executed on 6 July 1415. The execution of Hus, as well as five consecutive papal\u00a0crusades<\/a>\u00a0against followers of Hus, forced the Bohemians to defend themselves in the\u00a0Hussite Wars<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The uprising against imperial forces was led by a former mercenary,\u00a0Jan \u017di\u017eka<\/a>\u00a0of Trocnov. As the leader of the Hussite armies, he used innovative tactics and weapons, such as howitzers, pistols, and fortified wagons, which were revolutionary for the time, and established \u017di\u017eka as a great general who never lost a battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After \u017di\u017eka\u2019s death,\u00a0Prokop the Great<\/a>\u00a0took over the command for the army, and under his lead the Hussites were victorious for another ten years, to the sheer terror of Europe. The Hussite cause gradually splintered into two main factions, the moderate\u00a0Utraquists<\/a>\u00a0and the more fanatic\u00a0Taborites<\/a>. The\u00a0Utraquists<\/a>\u00a0began to lay the groundwork for an agreement with the Catholic Church and found the more radical views of the Taborites distasteful. Additionally, with general\u00a0war-weariness<\/a>\u00a0and yearning for order, the Utraquists were able to eventually defeat the Taborites in the\u00a0Battle of Lipany<\/a>\u00a0in 1434. Sigismund said after the battle that \u201conly the Bohemians could defeat the Bohemians.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite an apparent victory for the Catholics, the Bohemian Utraquists were still strong enough to negotiate\u00a0freedom of religion<\/a>\u00a0in 1436. This happened in the so-called\u00a0Basel Compacts<\/a>, declaring peace and freedom between Catholics and Utraquists. It would only last for a short period of time, as\u00a0Pope Pius II<\/a>\u00a0declared the Basel Compacts to be invalid in 1462.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
